“Navigating Life Together: Gus’s Beautiful Journey”

A couple years ago a friend shared on Facebook a post pleading for an adopter for an older, blind and deaf dog named Hawking. We had recently lost our 14-year-old Great Pyrenees, and our hearts were still heavy. We were in no way looking to rescue another dog yet. But for some reason, I couldn't get this dog out of my mind. A week after seeing the post, I told my husband I had to check on him. In my mind, no one else would adopt a senior, blind, and deaf dog if we didn't. His first comment was that we didn't know anything about blind OR deaf dogs, but he quickly came to the conclusion we would just figure it out! And we did.Hawking, or as he would come to be called, Gus, was still available.

LRGR brought him to our home and the connection was immediate! We figured out navigating stairs and it wasn't long before he was navigating our house like he'd lived here all his life. The challenges were there, but the rewards FAR OUTWEIGHED them. His nose rivaled any bloodhound. He could find me anywhere! I could be cooking and he would slip up behind me and just lean against my legs. He would find me in the backyard swing, and his favorite spot was snoozing beside me on the couch. While it was clear that Gus needed us, we realized that Gus filled a hole in our lives and we needed him too!

We had him almost 2 years before he died, but we wouldn't trade those two years for anything! Gus made such a wonderful impact on our whole family, he taught us a lot about love and overcoming challenges, and he will always hold a special place in my heart. I would encourage everyone to look past the challenges and welcome the love and happiness that awaits.

His story proves that when we open our hearts, we find the most extraordinary connections.
