What dog food should I feed my Lab?

"What is the best food to feed your dog or puppy?" Here at LRGR, we are frequently asked that question by our adopters. It is a great question because we believe good health begins with proper nutrition, regardless of price or convenience.

There is no single answer to the question, "What is the 'best' dog food for your pet?" It depends on your dog's health and if there are specific issues that need to be addressed. Your vet will help with any special dietary needs.

For healthy dogs and puppies, we recommend a meat-based diet. Chicken, lamb, turkey, fish, beef, and venison are all good choices and should be the first ingredient. Look at the labels on the dog food. Meat, NOT a meat by-product, should be the first ingredient. By-products are the leftovers, not for human consumption, i.e. the bones, organs, blood, beaks, etc. Stay away from corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, and fillers.

LRGR recommends the website Dog Food Advisor (http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/). There are many 4- and 5-star dog foods to review. Remember your dog needs a healthy, balanced diet made from quality ingredients. Find a food that your dog tolerates well, provides him with plenty of energy, and gives him beautiful skin and a shiny coat.
